At a meeting on the 18th August 2011, I announced that I would be stepping down as Pipe Major of the Royal Burgh of Annan Pipe Band, a post I have held since September 2008.  I have chosen to step down as I intend to move to Dublin, Ireland this year and I felt it was best that a new Pipe Major should take the band forward with a fresh approach and new ideas.

It was always an ambition to be Pipe Major of the band after serving as Pipe Sergeant for 4 years and I am thankful that I got the opportunity to fulfil that ambition.  I’ve been privileged enough to work with some great people in the band and in the committee and I thank them for their help and support, particularly Colin and Scott Smith for answering the call and joining the band and helping to revitalise our Drum Corps at a time where we were really struggling for numbers.  Almost overnight our numbers increased and our teaching policy was intensified, shortly after that Murray Dunbar came in to help out with the Bass Section and I think that the results speak for themselves when you see the band marching at Annan ROM with 8 side drummers, 6 tenor drummers and 2 bass drummers.  That was a wonderful achievement.  I’m sure the drum corps will get bigger and better in the years to come.

Whilst the results haven’t always been as good as we’d all hoped, I’m very proud to have been Pipe Major of the band at a time where, in 3 years, we went from barely having a big enough band to compete at minor contests to having two competing pipe bands.  I want to thank Ian Nicholson for supporting me as Pipe Sergeant for the last 3 years and the other members of the pipe corps for sticking with us for what has been a challenging period while we rebuilt the band, particularly Tim Schoolar, Donald Robson and Irvine Torbett, who have helped to bring on so many young pipers which culminated in the first appearance of the Royal Burgh of Annan Juvenile Pipe Band at the British Championships and I was delighted to see them holding their own so early.  I’ve no doubt that they’ll improve in the coming season, which will help to make the senior band stronger in the future.  Keep up the good work and keep practicing!!

The 2012 season will be my last with the band.  I’m sure that with hard work, we can all make it a successful one.

Thank you
Chris Shearer
